HMGS
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
National
History Day (NHD):
HMGS
is committed to furthering the study of military
history by more than words. HMGS has joined
with the National History Day Program to support
Special Prizes in Military History at the National
and several State and Regional competitions. This
program encourages middle/junior high and high school
students, in groups or by individuals, to research
and present dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits,
multimedia documentaries or papers based on research
related to an annual theme. (Note: the 2004 NHD
theme is: “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange
in History”)
In
2003 HMGS supported two $1,000 prizes at the National
level competition, held at the University of Maryland,
as well as two $150 prizes at both the Maryland
and Pennsylvania State competitions and two $50
prizes for the Lancaster, PA and Baltimore, MD regional
competitions. We look to expand our number of supported
state competitions this year and hope to work with
our other HMGS Chapters to increase their involvement
in this important program. Please remember, however,
that to expand our number of supported state programs
we need to have volunteers who are willing to coordinate
HMGS support with the respective NHD State staffs.
If you want to serve as an HMGS State Coordinator
or staff member please contact the Vice President
for Educational Services at outreach@hmgs.org.

Education
Fund:
Due to HMGS’s non-profit educational AND charitable
status, the Board of Directors has authorized the creation
of an HMGS Education Fund account (separate from the General
Fund) to allow for and ensure that Education Fund donations
(money, investments, real property and/or goods) are only
used to support our educational activities. Fund resources
will only to be used for HMGS activities as endorsed in the
HMGS Strategic, Contract for History, Educating History and
subsequent plans .
These
resources would support programs such as the various HMGS
Special Prizes in Military History for National, State and
Regional History Day competition(s); classroom outreach programs
for primary and secondary school history teachers, and/or
journal type efforts to reach out to the professional and
amateur military historian communities. These funds will not
reduce the Society’s financial commitment to our educational
mission, but rather allow us to increase the depth and breadth
of these programs as our educational volunteer base increases.
More information will be provided as this program matures.
Watch here for fund updates.
Education
Committee:
Currently under review are options to create a new standing
committee which would guide our educational activities and
oversee the implementation of the Society’s educational
and charitable programs. Watch here for developing committee
details.
Previous
HMGS Education Activities:
1) SCHOLARSHIP: HMGSt has recently offered a post secondary
educational scholarship program to deserving students with
financial need. With one student still active, this program
is currently in abeyance as we reconfigure it to better support
the Society’s mission -- "to promote, aid and assist
in the education of historical gaming and military history.”
2) JOURNAL
OF MILITARY AND NAVAL HISTORY: HMGS semi-annually published
this journal for several years with the product being provided
to various academic organizations at minimal or no cost. A
few copies of the latest edition are still available for purchase.
Contact the Vice President for Educational Services at outreach@hmgs.org for additional
information.
