BATTLES FOR BEGINNERS

Every year non-gamers come to historical miniatures conventions. At Historicon 2002, 315 attendeessigned up as new HMGS East members and many of these are likely to be attending a convention for the first time. Try to imagine the impression on some one who has never seen even one miniatures game in his life when he sees hundreds of them in one place. While a newcomer might be drawn to miniatures gaming by interests in history, games and modeling common to those who love this hobby, he's probably intimidated by the obvious amounts of time and money laying on those tables.

Thus while the big showcase games, the ones that turn heads and are talked about for years, will impress and inspire the newcomer, he probably thinks that doing a game like that is beyond his skill, budget and available time. If that newcomer is going to be converted from onlooker to gamer, he needs to see that there is an accessible starting point.

In order to help provide this starting point, at Fall In! 2003, the HAWKs will present the "Battles for Beginners Competition." The object is to show a convention visitor how he can get started on his own, in a relatively short time, on a modest budget. At Fall In! 2003 -- where convention planners are projecting 1000 visitors -- the contestants will run their games and help judge the other competitors.

The contest committee will publish a collection of all submitted descriptions and scenarios. This is envisioned as a "Battles You Can Recreate" anthology of scenarios and instructions - a valuable resource for beginning wargamers. No decision has been made about making this a web or paper document. To facilitate this publication, all entrants will be asked to sign a transfer of copyright form. Any proceeds from publication will be used to promote the hobby of Historical Miniatures Wargaming.

Eleven GMs have entered the BBC with games from ancient to modern. All games will be run on Saturday November 15th at Fall In!, in the “Russia” area. Starting at 9 AM, two hour games will run two at a time every two hours, with the winner being announced soon after the last game. Check the PEL for games sponsored by BBC.
